JS World Literature Student

This is a wonderful, college-prep literature course designed for high school students. Each book in this series starts with a mini-course in worldview philosophy. This is an important concept, because your child will be taught to analyze literature according to the world view of the author and to compare it to the Christian world view! Brilliant!

World Literature Curriculum (Cultural Influences of Early to Contemporary Voice) by James Stobaugh -

This is a wonderful, college-prep literature course designed for high school students. Each book in this series starts with a mini-course in worldview philosophy. This is an important concept, because your child will be taught to analyze literature according to the world view of the author and to compare it to the Christian world view! Brilliant!

- Enjoy beloved classics while developing vocabulary, reading, and critical thinking skills! Each literature text in the series is a one-year course. Each chapter includes daily concept-building exercises, warm-up questions, and guided readings. Easy-to-use with suggested reading schedules.

This curriculum equips students to think critically about philosophy and trends in culture, and to articulate their views through writing. You will not have to find these literature selections in the library or bookstore, because selections from classic literature (prose, poetry, and drama) are included in the student’s text! Each course represents 34 weeks of study, with an overview of narrative background material on the writers, their historical settings, and worldview.

The teacher’s guide (see link below) outlines student objectives, providing the answers to the assignments and weekly exercises. The final lesson of the week includes both the exam, covering the week’s chapter, as well as essays based on that week’s study. Personally I feel the teacher’s guide is necessary to this program - mainly for the essay assignments and the answer key. The teacher’s guide also includes tests. The teacher's guide is loose-leaf, 3-hole punched.

What I like: This program is brilliantly crafted to be easy to use (but not an easy course by any stretch of the imagination!). I love how students are encouraged to learn about other world views while developing and strengthening their own world view. I love that this course dovetails perfectly with Stobaugh’s history curriculum (see link below), so if you’re studying World History, your student can also study the literature of that particular time period!

What I find challenging: the author consistently uses vocabulary that is unfamiliar to even well-read people. This is done deliberately to force the student to learn new vocabulary. Make sure your student is equipped with a dictionary (or dictionary program) so he can get the most out of this course!
