The Power in Your Hands Workbook

This is one of the most logical, well-written, user-friendly high school level writing courses I have yet found. It is designed to gently and thoroughly develop your student's writing skills. Two things you need to know about Sharon Watson: she herself is an amazing writer, so her course is fun and interesting rather than textbookish; and she's incredibly encouraging. In fact her objectives for the course are two-fold: to gain in competence/skill AND to impact the student's attitude toward writing through encouragement and success.

The Power in Your Hands Workbook by Sharon Watson

This is one of the most logical, well-written, user-friendly high school level writing courses I have yet found. It is designed to gently and thoroughly develop your student's writing skills. Two things you need to know about Sharon Watson: she herself is an amazing writer, so her course is fun and interesting rather than textbookish; and she's incredibly encouraging. In fact her objectives for the course are two-fold: to gain in competence/skill AND to impact the student's attitude toward writing through encouragement and success.

The Power in Your Hands is so easy to use, with a year's worth of daily lessons. The course will train your student in the following areas:

  • Thinking/planning
  • Opinion
  • Persuasion (including logic, compare and contrast, morals and ethics, and emotional appeal)
  • SAT Essay
  • Proofreading
  • Letter writing (including practical skills such as letters of condolence and email etiquette)
  • Process writing (how-to)
  • Position papers
  • Devotionals
  • Journalism
  • Biography
  • Descriptive writing
  • Personal testimony
  • Interview
  • ...and more!

The student book is designed to be consumable, with frequent instructions to "write in the margin." There is not much room to write, so you could probably have your student write in a separate notebook, and save the workbook for your other students; however, you do NOT have photocopy privileges, and there ARE numerous checklists throughout the book for your student to use in evaluating and proofreading. All of that to say, if you are on a tight budget, you could probably make this work as a non-consumable with a little effort on your part, but for the price, it's probably just easier to buy a workbook for each student.

The course can be used completely independently, but Sharon Watson has also added components to make it co-op friendly as well. Now, when I said "independently" in the previous sentence, I was referring to the fact that it's actually designed for independent homeschool use. I want to add that the course can be used independently, meaning also that the student can do it on his own. The Power in Your Hands is designed for any high school student: reluctant and unskilled writers as well as gifted writers. And, though it can stand alone, the teacher's guide (sold separately) is an invaluable resource as well. It contains additional work/discussion for co-op settings, helps for the teacher, the answer key, detailed checklists to help you grade your student's writing, and an entire second year of writing projects! These writing projects (called "14-Minute Power Surges") are just plain fun. The idea is that after you complete the course, your student can spend the second year fine-tuning and honing his skills in a non-threatening daily writing project. He would choose one of his completed "Power Surges" per week to proofread, edit, and have graded. You could also use these daily "Power Surges" concurrently with the course, but that's not how they were designed.

Here is what one student said about The Power in Your Hands: "This course was one of the most entertaining and useful classes I took all year, if not one of my favorites from my entire high school career." Now, that's high praise indeed!
