God's Great Covenant New Testament 1 Student Book

By Claire A. Larsen

In God's Great Covenant, New Testament 1: A Bible Course for Children, students will follow the story of Jesus, the Messiah and King, as He is born and fulfills all God's promises. But Jesus does not arrive as people expected. The people were looking for a mighty warrior to deliver them from the oppressive Roman government. Instead, He came as the suffering Savior, who would die as the sacrifice for sin and death. He was building a kingdom that was not of this world-it was the kingdom of God. He is the Son of Man, God's Servant, the Messiah, and the Son of God. Each of the four units in this text emphasizes one of these names of Jesus. God's Great Covenant, New Testament 1 teaches the Gospels to students in fourth grade and up, using stories, worksheets, memory verses, devotional guides, quizzes, and a little boy named Simon. In the introductions to the text, students will also learn about the historical, cultural, and geographical setting of the New Testament. This book is a most comprehensive and heartfelt study of the Gospels, and many parents and teachers will find themselves learning along with their students.

This delightful classical Bible program is just plain wonderful! Covering the Gospels, God's Great Covenant (from Classical Academic Press) has 32 well-written lessons (to last 32 weeks). The author is a delightful storyteller, making the text so interesting. Each lesson contains a memory page and a fun worksheet (puzzles, etc.) plus a quiz sheet. You can easily do this as a family study (multi-level), but photocopy privileges are not given, so you’d need a student book for each child. It could also be used for individual study in your homeschool.  God’s Great Covenant would mesh well with your homeschool studies of ancient history (such as Mystery of History).

What I like: Besides her interesting storytelling, I love how the author gently drills important Bible facts into the kids. Her creative puzzles and games make learning fun and inevitable and are not at all “twaddly”! The kids really are learning from this – and tying in the OT facts with their need for a Savior.

“Do you need the teacher materials?” you might ask. The teacher materials contain the answer key, but you really don’t need it. There are 2 great features included with God’s Great Covenant teacher’s key, however, that you’ll want to be aware of. First, there are great teacher helps about the history, geography, and culture of the time (helpful if you’re doing this as a family or tying it into your homeschool history studies). Another neat feature is that each lesson is tied in to the Catechism-for-kids questions if you would like to have your kids working on the catechism at the same time.

For kids from about age 7-13
