Caution: Writing for Boys

Caution: Writing in this Book Might Be Fun! (for Boys)

Mention "creative writing" to most typical boys, and they'll run screaming from the house, or play sick, or try to flush their creative writing book down the toilet. However, "Caution: Writing In This Book Might Be Fun!" was written by a boy who really hates creative writing. Stephen, my son, sympathizes with your son's writing struggles and tries to give your son ideas of zany-boy things to write about. Full of bright colors and obnoxious color schemes, writing examples to get the proverbial ball rolling, and crazy ideas (with a few cautionary comments from Mom Kemmerer - er, me), your son might actually enjoy creative writing!

Use this book as an idea bank to supplement your favorite creative writing curriculum, or as a stand-alone curriculum. It contains 26 writing assignments, as well as a self-editing check list. I've been challenging Stephen to remember that you can't write well unless you write about something you love (Moms, you'll want to remember that. It's the most important tip I can give you concerning creative writing...). Some of the writing challenges included in "Caution" include: -Boys and fire (your best fire story) -Your dream car -Design an ATV track -Your best injury story (you know how guys try to out-do each other with "my injury is better than your injury" accounts!) So, if your son finds creative writing painful, this might be the ice-breaker you've been looking for!

My son really resisted any form of creative writing.....until this book! We used this with him when he was in the middle elementary years, with great success! The writing prompts/questions offer a variety of topics so that your student is never saying, "Oh, no....we have to write on this AGAIN!" Helps to spark creativity and ingenuity, tapping these sometimes "hidden" resources in boys. My son had fun writing "without bounds" in this simple-to-use writing journal/book. Makes for a nice, compact momento of a student's writing, also!
