Write On - The Kid-Friendly Mother-Pleasing Gentle Way to Learn to Write

by Karen Newell

Homeschool subjects covered:  Creative writing, language arts, writing assignments.

I am really excited about Write On! It is everything the title claims to be! Designed for 3rd - 8th grade, with four levels (beginner through master), this delightful guide integrates with all unit studies and curricula. It is also suitable for multi-level teaching (always a plus). The course contains 100 writing projects from simple sentences to writing a thesis. I wouldn't expect a 3rd grader to write a thesis, so this book could theoretically last you throughout your student's middle school years. In fact, I think this course is so thorough, I plan to use it with my 11th grader. After all, isn't the common complaint something like, "most college students don't know how to compose a simple sentence or paragraph." In Write On each page gives the student some simple objectives, several samples, and a creative writing assignment.

Karen Newell did such a great job of demonstrating how useful and FUN creative writing is!  She uses a "2 steps forward, 1 step back" approach. More challenging excercises are broken into smaller simple assignments and are generally followed by a fun activity. For example, we all know that creative writing involves writing compositions, essays, and reports.  But what about crossword puzzles, riddles, acronymns, giving directions, and creating advertisements.  These all require creative writing!  One assignment involves teaching kids to write a simple three-paragraph report.  Before they do this, however, they are assigned a simpler task:  write three sentences about any topic.  My son wrote: "Bees like flowers. Bees make honey.  Bees sting."  Easy enough.  The next assignment had him turn those three sentences into three paragraphs.  He had to write a paragraph on bees liking flowers or making honey...and he enjoyed writing about bee stings.  Ta-dah! A three-paragraph report just like that!  The next day (since that would be considered challenging for kids who don't like to write), your student might be asked to create 3 "What Am I" riddles.  You see?...Two steps forward, one step back.

I will say this is by far my favorite creative writing program!

I don't think you can get a creative writing program much more simple, thorough, mom-friendly and gentle than this! Compared to other creative writing programs, this one's a real bargain, too! Permission is granted to make copies for your own kids.
