Language Lessons (F) For The Elementary Child 1 - This is the sixth book in the series, for grades 4-6. More advanced grammar,
contractions, alphabetizing,
synonyms, antonyms,
compound and run-on
sentences, letter writing, poetry
writing, picture study, narration,
copywork and more. This program is skill specific rather than grade specific (which is why these aren't grade-leveled). If you are looking for a really easy-to-use, delightful language arts program, utilizing the Charlotte Mason method, then you’ll love Sandi Queen’s Language Lessons. I found it quite amazing how Sandi kept the assignments short, “twaddle-free,” and so varied - something different each day. What I like: I love the ease of use, the variety, and the fact that it didn't consume lots of time. (I always like programs that do what they need to do quickly so that we can spend more time in projects. If I'm always spending lots of time on these basic things, then I don't feel like doing projects! Hence my love for programs that teach things quickly and well...) Also, my kids really liked this program. What I didn't like: A friend of mine also used these books and was concerned that there wasn’t enough review - that her kids worked through the lessons way too quickly for them to actually sink in (the lessons only take 5-10 minutes a day). So be warned. This is not to say that my friend is looking for busy work to fill her kids' days (she's not); however, if you ARE used to having your kids do lots of busy work, then you might be concerned. If you want your kids to learn what they need to learn by actually reading and writing, then you’ll appreciate the fact that this program does not waste your time with lots of busy work. All of the volumes in this series contain reproductions (in full color) of masterpieces. Depending on the age/grade level, your student will be given 180 daily age-appropriate practices in the following: Art appreciation, the alphabet, copywork, poetry, creative experession, short/long vowels, phonics rules, grammar, capitalization, punctuation, letter writing, dictation, and editing. Our kids aren’t stupid. They know when you’re wasting their time with stuff they’ll never use. Give them real reading and writing, target their weak areas with specific studies, then drill them with short, pleasant drills such as these. You won’t regret it. We are not allowed to discount these books.
