Please note - the publisher has provided us with photocopies (stapled in the corner). If you want to get started in this level place your order with confidence and we'll ship you a photocopy along with the answer key. Now for the product description....I admit it. Math is not my forte. I’ve tried a number of programs out there. They were all good and helpful in some ways by not so helpful in others. Saxon is a fine program. I love Math-U-See. I’ve successfully used Bob Jones and Key To. So, let me introduce you to a program that helped me (the mathematically challenged mom) to teach my equally challenged son his foundational math. It’s called Developmental Mathematics. It’s not a flashy program. It doesn’t come with manipulatives (though you can easily use manipulatives with it). But it does provide your student with logical clues to help him apply math in everyday circumstances. It also teaches him how to do mental math (for those times when he doesn’t have access to a calculator). For example, when learning to add the 8’s, my 7-year-old daughter instinctively understands that 8+6 is really just a 10+4. She regroups in her mind and easily adds it up. It’s a nice little trick - and very logical. And that’s what is so cool about this program! It reiterates what my husband tries to convince me to believe: math is simply logical thinking applied to everyday situations. There are other great things about this program. It’s economical. It’s broken down into levels that make it easy to place, skip, or repeat a level when necessary – something you can’t easily do when you’ve invested in a thick textbook. The average progression is about 2 levels a year, but you can feel free to speed up the process or slow it down and do a book over. In each level the student is taken through 4 stages: first using pictures of real objects (such as money) as models, second using numbers (symbols) without objects, third is drill work to increase the student’s speed in computation, and finally application with word problems. Each level also comes with a free diagnostic test so you can pinpoint the student’s problem areas, and each level ends with a unit test. You also get a progress chart to track your student’s performance so you can easily assess where their weaknesses lie. The explanations are simple and clear, making this a great program for self-directed study. Developmental Math will build a solid mathematical foundation for your student that will serve him well in his future years. My oldest son (who used Developmental Math through his elementary years) is now an honors business major in college! The set includes a student workbook and a solution manual and retails for $20. Level 10 reinforces addition and subtraction by working with 3-digit numbers. It also introduces adding and subtracting money.
