Johnny Tremain is the Newbery Award winner by Esther Forbes. Set in Boston during the Revolutionary war, Johnny Tremain is the story of a brilliant orphan boy who was apprenticed to a silver smith. Though young, Johnny has a bright future before him as he is quickly recognized as the driving force behind the silver smith. With marriage to the master's daughter in view, and the eventual ownership of the shop, things are looking up for Johnny, until a jealous fellow apprentice plays a prank on Johnny that literally ruins his life. Now an outcast, his only hope is in finding his relatives, and a silver chalice is his only clue. Things go from bad to worse when he is arrested as a thief. Only his friendship with the Patriots of Boston can save him. A wonderful story that clearly depicts the emotional turmoil as the citizens of Boston were forced to choose sides in a painfully life-defining moment in time.

This is one of the books I read as a child that stood out pleasantly in my memory. It was a pleasure to read it aloud to my children again as we studied American History. It is so much more enjoyable and real to read history of the Boston Tea party era through the eyes of this youth, and learn about life, & culture the same. We all enjoyed this book! Highly recommended!!
