Balto, the Bravest Dog Ever by Natalie Standiford (Step Into Reading Level 3)

Balto, the Bravest Dog Ever, is based on the true story of an Alaskan sled dog. In 1925 there was an outbreak of diptheria in Nome, Alaska.  Two children desparately need medicine, but the train bearing the life-giving medicine is stuck in the snow 700 miles away.

The rescue is now in the paws of 21 sled dogs, and the race is on.  One of the final legs of the journey is the most treacherous, with blinding snow, huge drifts, and cracking ice.  Balto is the lead dog, and successfully navigates all the hazards, arriving 10 days ahead of schedule with the medicine, and saving the lives of the two children.
