Home Economics for Home Schoolers Level 3
by The Pearables with Ann White
The Home Economics for Home Schoolers books were written for girls ages 10 and up (figuring realistically, that's the age little girls should be learning these skills rather than waiting until they're in high school!). Published by the Pearables company, this book is full of scripture, encouragement, and sound advice presented in a very user-friendly format. There are 30 lessons presented - one for each week. In Level Three they are taught lessons in several categories. In cooking and baking (17 lessons) they are presented with lessons such as nutrition, sauteing and stir-frying vegetables, healthy snacks, making quick breads and yeast breads, and making breakfast. They are also taught to clean up after themselves. In the unit on cleaning they are taught how to iron, clean a bathroom, clean the kitchen, and even how to make homemade cleaning solutions. In sewing they are taught how to read and use a pattern and how to use a sewing machine (5 lessons). In organization they are taught the invaluable skill of organizing the kitchen (1 lesson). The book ends with 2 lessons on hospitality - including instructions on hosting a simple lunch party with some friends. Each task throughout the book is broken down into simple steps. For example, in the yeast bread lessons, students are taught how to make soft pretzels (recipe included). As you can imagine, the lessons are generally enthusiastically completed! If you are like me and long to pass real skills on to your daughters, but find yourself doing the hit-or-miss method, you'll love the well-thought-out, gentle progression in these books.
