George Washington's World
by Genevieve Foster
Beautiful Feet Books
This is a Newbery honor book. If you've never read a Genevieve Foster book, then you're in for a treat. Foster has this unique approach of teaching history horizontally - not just focusing on one character in one location, but looking at all the events and characters of a particular time period all over the world, and examining how they are all interconnected. So, when studying George Washington, Foster weaves a story of the world around her central character; including stories of scientific discovery and invention, music, literature, art, and religion. She has a for telling stories that will especially delight and amuse her youthful audience. The years 1732 to 1799 were truly revolutionary in many parts of the world as Enlightenment thinking took hold in the minds of men. When George was a young man, Benjamin Franklin was the most well-known American and George II was king of England. Mozart and Bach were writing music. Lafayette, James Cook, and Voltaire are just a few of the interesting people of this time period. Beautifully illustrated with line drawings and detailed timelines, this book is a wonderful resource for any study of early American history or Virginia state histoy. Written for grades 4-8, but with appeal to a wide age range. I love this book!
