Carry On, Mr Bowditch
by Jean Lee Latham
Carry On, Mr Bowditch is the biography of Nathaniel Bowditch, the 18th century mathematical genius who wrote The seaman's navigational guide. This Newbery Award winning book by Jean Lee Latham tells the touching story of a young man whose dreams are dashed with the death of his parents. Not one to be kept down, he studies alone after hours (as an apprentice to a ship's chandler), and eventually realizes that many of the books and guides used for ship's navigation contain major errors. As a self-educated young man, he goes on to discover new ways to navigate, author a book, and eventually captain his own ship. A wonderful story of determination and perseverance.
A Progeny Press Study guide is available for this book. This book is recommended reading in Tapestry of Grace, Sonlight, Trail Guides to Learning, Learning Language Arts Through Literature, and Illuminations.
