Age of Opportunity by Paul Tripp is another life-changing book. It specifically addresses raising teens. Whether we like it or not, our kids are being raised in the 21st century. They are exposed and subjected to temptations of all kinds. The encouraging theme of the book, however, is that this is not time to fear or react in frustration. All the temptations our kids face, all their failures, all the times they conform to the world, all their acts of rebellion, - this entire season of life is marvelously designed by our Creator to teach our kids of their need for a Savior and to bind them to our hearts in solid relationship. What a joy to be equipped to draw out my teens and discuss with them all that life throws at them! How sweet is the fellowship between teen and parent when you can talk about what’s happening in their hearts. Be warned, however. Even though this book is full of godly wisdom and sound advice, much of the book is geared toward us, the parents. Do I nag? Lecture? React in anger, irritation, or self-righteousness? The truth of the matter is that my teen is not the only sinner in need of a savior in our household! Learning to be humble and allowing my kids to see into the processes of sanctification in my own life has proven to be one of the greatest blessings of parenting.
